We're excited to welcome our new ambassador, Dame Susan Devoy!
Four times Women’s World Squash Champ and senior public servant who has dedicated her life to NZ sports and is well recognised for her service to the community.
We sat down with Susan to ask her a few questions about life behind the scenes and why she reaches for Omrub above all.
You started playing squash at such a young age, was it always in the cards for you to pursue a professional sporting career? What did you love about Squash?
My family were all involved in squash. My six older brothers all played so I spent a lot of time hanging around squash courts and would often jump on court between their matches or when they were socialising after their games. It’s a fast and physical game combined with a strong technical aspect, and I loved the social side as well.
Your son Julian is a track athlete, what wisdom did you pass onto him as he pursued his sporting goals?
It's hard giving advice as a parent. He has an amazing work ethic so no worries in that department, if anything I would tell him to do everything he can, to realise his potential. Sport at that level is only for a short period of your life.
What is something you would like to tell 17-year-old Susan? What advice to you have for young people competing in their chosen sport?
The reality is that there is no substitute for hard work and if you want to be really good you have to love training as much as you love competing.
You have dedicated a lot of your time to the community, what has been your biggest personal achievement in helping others?
I enjoy doing anything that gives me purpose. Personally, my biggest achievement is knowing that I used my success to help others.
What does a normal day look like for you at the moment?
Well, I have so much on the go, mostly on a volunteer basis these days, so no days are the same. Generally, I walk the dog then walk up Mt Maunganui, clear all the emails and admin. I still have to cook and clean and go to the supermarket, so pretty much like other people, however I am away a lot. I am on a number of Boards so that always requires preparation for meetings.
What do you do for fun, and how do you like to keep active?
I do a lot of walking/tramping and go the gym occasionally. For fun there's nothing better than spending time with family and friends over a few drinks and a nice bottle of wine.
How did you hear about Omrub?
I know Angela and Apa (the owners) both who I respect so thought they must be onto a good thing!
What makes you reach for Omrub?
I am quite careful about what I put on my skin so the fact that it's natural is a big plus. I often have little niggles, so it offers good relief and smells so good. Might sound ridiculous but rubbing in Omrub is like a little de-stressor.
We are so incredibly proud to welcome you onboard as an Omrub ambassador, what is the first thing you tell people when recommending the product?
Try it for a few days I think you will be pleasantly surprised by the results!
If you are curious whether Omrub is right for you, feel free to reach out and ask, we're happy to help!
